Rotavirus Vaccination

As of October 1, 2012, the doctors at Children’s Medical Group of Greenwich will be offering the Rotavirus vaccine (brand name Rotateq™). Rotateq vaccine is designed to be given at the 2 month, 4 month and 6 month well child visits. It is an oral vaccine.

Rotavirus is a viral illness associated with large amounts of foul smelling diarrhea. This diarrhea is the top cause of dehydration in infants worldwide, often resulting in the need for IV rehydration. The virus is transmitted by fecal-oral contamination, and is a common outbreak in daycare centers. Since this is a viral disease, there is no cure if the disease is contracted.

Rotateq is a live, attenuated virus that gives immunity to the disease without contracting the disease. It is designed only for infants, and should not be given after your child is 8 months old. Please speak to your doctor if you have any other questions about rotavirus, Rotateq, or any other immunization.
